Biography

Harry Bulow was born in Des Moines, Iowa, and his formative years were spent in California. He studied saxophone, flute, clarinet and piano performing in bands and orchestras throughout the San Diego region. His principal teachers of musical composition and orchestration include Aaron Copland, Roy Travis, Henri Lazarof and David Ward-Steinman. His works have received numerous prizes and awards including 1st Prize at the International Composers Competition in Trieste, Italy, the Oscar Espla, Prize from the city of Alicante, Spain, an NEA Composer Fellowship and 35 consecutive ASCAP Plus Awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. In 1974, he was awarded a Diploma in Saxophone Performance from Trinity College of Music in London.  Bulow graduated with distinction in music from San Diego State University (1975) and went on to earn an MA and PhD in theory and composition from UCLA (1978, 1981)

His works have been performed throughout the world. Notable ensembles performing his compositions include the Moscow National Symphonic Band, the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra (Sofia, Bulgaria), the San Antonio, Omaha, Honolulu Symphonies, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, and the Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble. Bulow’s musical style reveals influences from Witold Lutoslawski, Karel Husa, and Peter Mennin among others. Musically eclectic, his music often includes aspects of sound-mass composition, minimalism, and American jazz. He is Professor of Music at Purdue University.
